Although Hardy himself has been dead for some 80 years his work is as relevant now as ever. Several of his major novels have been made into films/television series, thus introducing them to a wider audience in the Hardy world.

At the other end of the spectrum we have distinguished literary and academic members from all over the world.

We are a diverse group of Hardy enthusiasts of all ages and from all walks of life. And wherever you fit into this group, the common theme is that we all share a love of Hardy and his works.

As Hardy enthusiasts we enjoy ourselves, much as Hardy himself enjoyed a variety of different pleasures, including:

Walks through the towns and countryside associated with the books and poetry.

Classical concerts, folk music and barn dances, reflecting Hardy’s love of all things musical.

Visiting buildings associated with Hardy’s writings, not always open to the public.

An International Conference every 2 years, with lectures led by prominent Hardy scholars, and also including walks/tours of the Wessex area and entertainment every evening of the 8 day event.

Our last Conference (in 2010) included the former poet laureate Andrew Motion opening the event and reading his own poems.

Also included were the New Hardy Players, an acting group re-formed by Norrie Woodhall,( at 105 years of age), the last person alive who met Hardy. The group put on a new play every year, based on a Hardy novel or short story.

The new annual membership costs are given below.  The figures in brackets and apply to members opting for the electronic version of the Journals:

  • A discount on all events run by the Society in your membership year, of at least 10% but often much more!
  • A chance to buy Hardy merchandise at a discount.
  • Three ‘Journals’ a year. The spring and summer editions focus on what’s going on in the world of Hardy, including the latest research into Hardy’s life and writings, with the autumn edition more academic in focus. All feature academics and Hardy fans contributions.
  • To keep the Journals’ costs and carbon footprint to a minimum, this is an e-publication, however if you would prefer the publication posted to you in hard copy the higher membership fee applies.
  • As well as all the above we will provide a forum for like-minded people with a website, tweets, blogs discussion groups and your Hardy related questions answered.
