Henchard's Last Will and Testament

A Beautiful Piece of Calligraphic Art by Jill Newton

This beautiful piece of work is by Jill Newton. It is to form part of a calligraphy exhibition, and showcases the pathos of Henchard's Last Will perfectly. The flowers above the skull are Rue, which symbolizes regret, and is also known as the Herb of Grace. The money is photocopied replicas of pound notes and shillings of the period, as Hardy specifies that Newson throws down the five notes, then chinks the coins down on top. Jill has also added Abel Whittle's mark as a witness signature, a poignant touch.
