A feminist response to Hardy's classic novel for the Edinburgh Fringe 2019 and tour of rural villages in South-West England

Ondervinden Theatre announces 'Tess', a feminist response to Hardy's classic novel.

Written and directed by Elske Waite

Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2019 2nd - 17th August (excluding the 11th)

A bold new work by award-nominated writer and theatre director Elske Waite, the production will run at the Fleming Theatre as part of the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, before embarking on a tour of rural villages of South-West England.

In this feminist response to Hardy's classic Tess of the d'Urbervilles, an ever-curious and practical Tess fights to overcome a harrowing encounter at the hands of her cousin Alec D'Urberville. With a fierce sense of justice, and a passion for the truth, she is led to revelations that take her beyond the bounds of Hardy's original text...

Told by an all-female cast, and accompanied by a live folk band, old traditions are mixed with contemporary perspectives, as this new production turns its eye on both 2019 and 1891 with equal scrutiny, asking how far we have truly come, and how deeply embedded these issues of female oppression are.

'Tess' is designed by Linbury prize-winner Khadija Raza, and features original music by Jonathon Ip, musician and composer behind the acclaimed 'Rambootan'. It's three-woman cast is comprised of Polly Waldron ('magnetic' The Telegraph), Emily Windham ('a fabulous, powerful performance' Pocketsize Theatre), and Colette McNulty ('bursts forth with passion' Broadway Baby).

Previews: 2nd and 3rd August 2019.
