This morning, 7 June, members of the Thomas Hardy Society together with

representatives of Dorchester Town Council and the Parish Church of St

Michael, Stinsford laid wreaths respectively at the Memorial to Hardy at

Top ' Town, Dorchester and at his tomb in Stinsford churchyard.

At the statue the Mayor introduced the proceedings, a wreath was laid and poems

were read. In the churchyard there was a prayer as well as poetry.

Because of the current restrictions there were only a small number of

people present, but it was felt to be very important to mark the great

man's birthday, especially as this year is the 180th anniversary of his

birth. The sun shone upon us as we undertook our act of remembrance.
