The Old Neighbour and the New - A Hardy and Barnes Walk
A Dorchester Literary Festival Event
Sunday 11th October, 10am
Meet outside Max Gate at 10 am for a 2.5-mile walk in Hardy’s footsteps across the fields to Winterbourne Came Church, where William Barnes was Rector and where he is buried; returning via Barnes’ Rectory to visit Max Gate garden. These houses and the beautiful walk over wooded Came Down resonate with both Hardy’s and Barnes’ poetry. Readings from the works of Thomas Hardy and William Barnes will be included, along with references to Hardy’s Short Story ‘The Doctor’s Legend’, which is set beside Winterbourne Came House. Led by Tony Fincham.
