Outer Casterbridge: Hardy and History - Neolithic Earthworks, Roman Durnovaria and much more besides
A Hardy Birthday Weekend Walk to Coincide with the Platinum Jubilee
Saturday 4th June at 10.00am
Meet at Hardy’s Statue in the West Walks at 10 am for a 7+ mile walk lead by Tony Fincham and Mark Chutter. The walk will climb to Pummery (Poundbury Camp), then head south beside the Roman Aqueduct to Mai-Dun (Maiden Castle), returning via The Ring (Maumbury Rings) and The Workhouse (DCH). Plentiful references to Hardy’s poetry and fiction, particularly The Mayor of Casterbridge, Far from The Madding Crowd, ‘A Changed Man’ and ‘A Tryst in an Ancient Earthwork’.
Some steep gradients. Advisable to bring a packed lunch as very limited facilities en route.
This walk is a free event but booking is recommended.
