'Wessex Heights – Thomas Hardy and Romanticism'
A THS Conference/Festival Lecture by Dr Tony Fincham
Tuesday 26th July at 9.15am - The United Church, Dorchester
A detailed exploration of one of Hardy’s greatest poems: a poem with an intense autobiographical tone, written at a time of deep despair. This analysis leads towards an aspect of Hardy’s writing often overlooked by contemporary criticism – that Hardy was a profoundly Romantic writer. ‘Wessex Heights’ is indeed a triumphant hymn to Romanticism.
Tony Fincham, a former Chairman and current Vice-President of the THS, is a semi-retired GP from rural Kent with a life-long passion for the works of Thomas Hardy. His PhD on medical aspects of Hardy’s life and works was published in 2008 as Hardy the Physician. A keen walker and interpreter of Hardy’s landscapes, he has also published Hardy’s Landscape Revisited (2010) and Exploring Thomas Hardy’s Wessex (2016).
