Translation by Rongyue Liu

Congratulations to new member Rongyue Liu, a literary translator from China, who has recently published “Wessex Tales" as an e-book.

He has already put 36 books of English classics into Chinese, including Tess of the D'Urbervilles, Jude the Obscure and Love Stories by Hardy and is now working on translating the rest of Hardy's short stories.

Liu is also a poet, and the poignant poem below records his commitment to Hardy.

To Be With Hardy by Rongyue Liu

Everyday, I seem to be with Hardy

Even though his flesh is not in the world anymore

I happily go into his many works

And listen to him telling the touching love stories

And the fate of those figures

Often the great waves aroused in my heart

I really feel that Hardy is not far away

And I’m almost always with him everyday

His voice and expression appear before me every moment

Because his works give him an everlasting life

Because the power of literature makes him shine with brilliance!

I try my best to understand his works thoroughly

I try my best to share the same feelings with him

I try my best to understand his heartbeats

I try my best to catch his ideas

Then have them smelted in my mind and become my own

And have them reappeared one by one in Chinese

And again reveal the splendid scenery delineated by him

The “bridge of heart” is the bridge of soul  (Note: “bridge of heart” is the penname of writer)

I build such a small bridge

And from a faraway foreign land

Take remote Hardy to my motherland

And let his works and thoughts bloom here too

I feel greatly honored to be one of his spokesmen

Though hardship is overspread on the road

His unique and wonderful arts

Make happiness and gratification

Cheerfully flow into my heart

The precept of Fu Lei is hung on the wall of my study(note: Fu Lei is famous translator of China)

Every words have flown into my blood and marrow

I know very well that fame and wealth may hinder one’s progress

Only “Love” can make one regardless of the cost

Hardy, I’ m willing

To dedicate my coming years to you

Because to be a spokesman of yours

Because to walk on the way of love

Will make life strewed with sunshine and richness

And more hard-won sweetness into our time……
