Terence Stamp RIP (1938–2025)
We were very sad to learn of the death of Terence Stamp at 87. His role as the dashing but heartless cad in the 1967 film of Hardy's Far from the Madding Crowd was as icon as his co-star, Julie Christie, who played his unfortunate wife, Bathsheba Everdene.
Stamp’s career spanned six decades of remarkable performances. From Billy Budd to Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, he was fearless, stylish, and magnetic on screen. A true icon of British cinema whose legacy will endure.
On 21 July 2018, we had the pleasure of welcoming Terence Stamp on his 80th birthday. He delivered the closing address at The Thomas Hardy Society’s 50th Anniversary Conference and Festival at the United Church, Dorchester, Dorset.
THS Secretary at that time, Mike Nixon (pictured with Stamp below) said Mr Stamp’s talk was a ‘wonderful climax’ to a great event.
He added: “He really was quite mesmerising and magical. He’s a very charismatic guy. He spoke about his career, interesting snippets about his role in Far From the Madding Crowd. He is actually left handed, but he had to do all the sword play right handed because of when the story is set."
He will be much missed.
