Society’s Annual London Lecture

A small but enthusiastic group gathered on the first Saturday of December for the Society’s Annual London Lecture.  Our speaker was Elizabeth Lowry, author of The Chosen, a Times best historical fiction book of 2022 and shortlisted for the Walter Scott Prize for Historical Fiction 2023.  Ms Lowry spoke about a main premise of her book:  Who pays the price of a writer’s fame?  The book is set in the time immediately following the death of Thomas Hardy’s wife Emma and discusses the impact of her death on Hardy, especially as he discovers a set of diaries that she had written.  Ms Lowry also discussed the challenges and opportunities that writing historical fiction presents.  Questions from the audience were encouraged, and a seminar-style discussion ensued, with questions about choosing a book title and the publishing industry in general.  It was a very enjoyable and insightful afternoon, many thanks to Ms Lowry and also to Mark Chutter, Chairman of the Society, who organized the event.
