Andrew Norman Discusses his Latest Book at Waterstones
On Saturday evening, Andrew Norman presented and discussed his latest book, Thomas Hardy and the Death of Emma - What the Writings Reveal, at Waterstones. The Thomas Hardy Society and Waterstones organised this official book launch.
During the event, Norman was interviewed by Mark Chutter, the Chairman and Academic Director of the Thomas Hardy Society. Norman addressed questions such as why Thomas Hardy was deeply affected by the death of his first wife, Emma, despite their estrangement, and how he coped with his bereavement.
Norman explained, "Hardy experienced the different stages of inner grief in his life with Emma’s passing in 1912. The journey returning to Boscastle to write this elegiac love poetry about his first wife while accompanied by his second wife Florence is intriguing."
Mark Chutter added, "There is a fascination within Hardy studies around his life and estrangement from Emma. Does this add to or overshadow the fiction, or are the life and the fiction inextricably linked? Was her creativity as the wife of a famous author stifled, residing in the attic space at Max Gate? My thanks to Andrew Norman and to Waterstones of Dorchester for hosting this event."
The event provided a deep dive into Hardy's personal life and its impact on his literary works, offering attendees a unique perspective on the renowned author's emotional journey.
