On the 22nd of October 1900 Hardy went with his niece on a cycling tour to the Wishing Well at Upwey where they both made a wish.

The Walk 11am

Led by Mark Chutter (THS Chairman) and Mark North (Dorset Museum). We will convene at Wey Valley Academy at 11am and walk to the inspiration for the poem ‘At the Railway Station, Upway’ (1853). From here we will view the sumptuous Lorton House where Hardy first plied his trade. Then we will continue to village of Broadwey to visit St Nicholas Church where restoration work was carried out by G. R. Crickmay of Weymouth and also the site of Hounsell's Stone Mason's yard which Hardy frequented. We will then journey from here following the River Wey towards old Dorchester Road on Ridgeway Hill. This was the inspiration for the first verse of the poem 'Great Things'. From the top of the hill can be seen many archaeological features such as the track of the old Roman road, Barrows, The site of the Viking massacre, and in addition spectacular views of Maiden Castle and Hardy's Casterbridge, Dorchester. We will then make our way down towards Upwey Wishing Well, and pass the Mill which Hardy used as his inspiration for Overcombe Mill in The Trumpet-Major (1880). Then finally head for luncheon at The Old Ship Inn. Please wear walking boots and appropriate clothing. The walk including lunch will be approximately three hours.
