Hardy and Patriotism by Professor Fred Reid
The 2022 THS Birthday Weekend Lecture
Saturday 4th June at 3.00pm in the Town Hall at the Corn Exchange, Dorchester
In conjunction with the Platinum Jubilee this year's THS Birthday Lecture will feature Historian Professor Fred Reid speaking about Hardy and patriotism, focusing on the years leading up to the First World War, its duration and aftermath, 1910-1920. This lecture will discuss Hardy's transition from an optimistic British Liberal imperialism to disillusionment with Britain's war aims and a growing hope in the United States. Professor Reid will also consider how far this evolution was in accord with the Liberal Anglican idea of history.
Fred Reid is Honorary Professor of History at the University of Warwick. His research interests are nineteenth century social history and literature, and his publications include: Keir Hardie: the Making of a Socialist (Croom Helm, 1978)
'Art and Ideology in Far from the Madding Crowd', in Thomas Hardy Annual, (London, 1986)
'THOMAS HARDY HUMANISM AND HISTORY', THE THOMAS HARDY YEAR BOOK, (Toucan Press, 1998)
