'Voices From Home: A Poetry Performance in Dialect'

This is a performance, with brief commentaries, of poems in various Engish dialects written mainly during the years of Thomas Hardy's lifetime. Items will be selected from the writing of C.F. Adams, William Barnes, Emily Dickinson, Robert Graves, Thomas Hardy, Gerard Manley Hopkins, Rudyard Kipling, Hugh MacDiarmid, William McGonagall, Alfred Lord Tennyson, Walt Whitman and W.B. Yeats.
Dr Alan Chedzoy is an authority on the life and work of William Barnes and has also pubished a number of literary biographies. He is a performance poetry reader specialising in dialect verse. An edited version of his 2019 address 'Foundations of English Dialect Poetry', given at the University of Lille, is reprinted in No Dialect Please, You're a Poet edited by Claire Helie et al (Routledge 2020).
