Local Company Crickmay Stark Architects are sponsoring the Hardy & Architecture Study Day taking place on Saturday 22nd February at The King's Arms in Dorchester.
Thomas Hardy started his career as an architect and Crickmay was a big part of his story. Architects, John Hicks and George Crickmay were rivals and the young Hardy started his training with Hicks aged 16 at 39 South Street (later the Gorge Cafe, destroyed recently by fire).
When Hicks died, Crickmay took over the business and Hardy spent a year with him, before leaving to focus on his writing. Crickmay continued to work on projects in Dorchester, designing the Dorset County Museum, which also has close ties to Hardy.
It's the end of an era and the start of an exciting new one for Crickmay Stark Architects as they have just moved to new offices at 57 High West Street, Dorchester, back on to the 'High Street' where George Crickmay and John Stark had their offices all those years' ago.
