Exploring the literary connections to Hardy’s Anglebury and the ancient history of the town

A group of Hardy enthusiasts enjoyed a walk around Wareham to explore the literary connections to Hardy’s Anglebury and the ancient history of the town. Wareham, which sits at the entrance to the Isle of Purbeck on the meandering rivers Frome and Piddle is a picturesque Dorset town steeped in heritage.

Sites linked to Hardy’s ‘Desperate Remedies’ and ‘The Hand of Ethelberta’ were visited with stops at Wareham Quay and the ancient church of St Martin’s to see the life-sized effigy of T. E. Lawrence. The turbulent history of the town was discussed, ending with a walk around the Saxon walls and a delicious Sunday lunch at The Horse & Groom.
