A residential study weekend organised by the Thomas Hardy and Philip Larkin Societies at Kingston Maurward College, Dorchester, Dorset DT2 8PY

Programme
Friday 9th August (97th anniversary of Larkin’s birth)
7.00 pm Welcome Drinks and Two-Course Dinner
8.00 pm Lecture by Philip Pullen ‘Philip Larkin in Hardy’s Wessex’
followed by an informal poetry reading


Saturday 10th August
9.30 am Welcome tea and coffee
10.00 am Question Time on Hardy and Larkin, chaired by Andrew Hewitt
11.00 am Coffee Break
11.30 am Lecture by Christopher Ricks: 'Hardy, Larkin and "a system of growing rhyme"'
1.00 pm Buffet Lunch
2.15 pm A walk through Hardy’s Heartland – the Kingston Maurward Estate,
Lower Bockhampton and Stinsford Church, led by Susan Clarke;
with appropriate readings en route.
7.00 pm Buffet Dinner, Followed by a Hardy and Larkin Quiz

Sunday 11th August
9.30 am Welcome tea and coffee
10.00 am Lecture by Professor James Booth ‘Writing Home’
11.15 am Buffet Brunch
12.15 pm Meet at The Town Pump, South Street, Dorchester for a walk around
Hardy’s Dorchester led by Alistair Chisholm, the Dorchester Town
Crier, and Dr Tony Fincham, THS Chairman, ending at...
1.15 pm Top-o’-Town, Dorchester for a circular coach trip through Hardy
Country to Weymouth and back, recreating Larkin's visit of January
1949. Two historic coaches belonging to the Wessex Historic
Transport Trust. Led by Dr Tony Fincham and Sue Clarke.
3.00 pm Return to Top-o’-Town.

Cost for the weekend (including dinner on the Friday and Saturday evenings and lunch on Saturday and Sunday): £82.50
Accommodation is available at Kingston Maurward College at £38 per person per night (B & B) – for Friday, Saturday & Sunday night (if needed). No en suite facilities are available at the college and those attending may prefer to stay elsewhere in Dorchester.

For those who would like to attend any or all of the three guest lectures only, rather than the whole weekend, these may be booked an paid for using the above details. Tickets for the lectures are £10 each, or £8 each for THS and PLS members.

 

***Please note that as of 8th July we can no longer take bookings for accommodation. However, you are very welcome to join us for the conference itself!!
