Thomas Hardy', ink drawing by Harry Furniss, 1923, copyright of National Portrait Gallery, London (NPG 3464); licenced for non-commercial use (CC BY-NC-ND 3.0)
In his autobiography, Thomas Hardy remembers himself as an ‘apt pupil who galloped unconcernedly over the ordinary school’ and a ‘born bookworm’ who learnt to read ‘almost before he could walk’. Yet in Hardy’s fiction education is frequently a source of despair and alienation. This talk examines such contrasting accounts by situating Hardy’s writing within late-Victorian debates about the purpose of education.
