London Walk: The Hardy Tree
A FREE walking tour of London places associated with Hardy
Meet: St Pancras Old Church, Pancras Road, London, NW1 1UL
Time: 12pm to 2pm
Join the Thomas Hardy Society on an interesting walk around London led by Mark Damon Chutter, THS Chair & Academic Director, visiting places associated with Thomas Hardy.
The walk will start from St Pancras Old Church, rich in history, from Romans to Parliamentarians and bodysnatchers, featured in Charles Dickens A Tale of Two Cities to its association with Thomas Hardy, who oversaw the dismantling and disinterment of many of the churchyard's graves during construction of the Midland Railway, while employed by Covent Garden Architect, Arthur Blomfield. The displaced tombstones were piled together and an ash tree planted to create a lasting memorial, which became known as "The Hardy Tree".
Walkers will enjoy finding out about Hardy's time in London and retrace his footsteps to places that he knew so well - with readings along the way.
Although the walk is free, booking online will give an indication of numbers.
