THS London Lecture 2025: Hardy in London
Annual Talk at University College London

Date: Saturday 6th December 2025
Time: 3pm
Speaker: Mark Damon Chutter, THS Chairman and Academic Director
Venue: The Gustave Tuck Lecture Theatre at UCL
Price: £10 per person
The talk will discuss Hardy's experiences in London. When Hardy was just 22, he left the sleepy market town of Dorchester for the cosmopolitan city of London. From 1862 to 1867, he worked as an architect for Arthur Blomfield, based in Covent Garden. Hardy worked for some of that time at 8 Adelphi Terrace, enjying a good view of the Thames.
For over 20 years he was a frequent visitor, staying in London and the suburbs. After marrying Emma, they lived in Tooting for 3 years before moving back to Dorset when Hardy became unwell. From then on they spent every “season” socialising in London from April to July. They rented various properties at addresses in Kensington, Bloomsbury, and others across the city. The Hardys clocked up over 30 different London addresses before the start of the first World War.
