Newly conserved Thomas Hardy sundial and Cerne Abbas Giant to feature on new series of BBC’s Hidden Treasures

Max Gate, the historic home of Thomas Hardy, and the iconic Cerne Giant feature in episode one of the fourth series of the BBC’s Hidden Treasures of the National Trust, which appears on screen on Friday 15 May.

The much-loved series, which celebrates the experts and volunteers caring for the places and collections in the National Trust’s care, is returning to BBC Two and iPlayer. This latest series highlights recent conservation work and volunteer efforts, shining a spotlight on Dorset’s rich cultural and natural heritage.

Designed by Hardy himself in 1885, his house Max Gate reflects his ambitions as an established figure in Dorset society. It was here that he wrote literary classics including Tess of the d’Urbervilles and Jude the Obscure, along with much of his poetry.

In the programme, viewers are invited inside Max Gate to see the National Trust team and specialist conservators at work restoring its sundial, a memorial designed by Hardy and erected after his death in 1928 by his wife Florence. The white timber dial bears the curious Latin inscription Quid de Nocte? meaning What of the night?. The show offers a fascinating glimpse into Hardy’s curiosity and creativity, and the care being taken to preserve his home for future generations.

“It’s extraordinary to see Hardy’s design brought back to life,” said Scott Welland, Visitor Operations and Experience Manager at Max Gate. “Every detail is a testament to Hardy’s vision.”

The episode also explores the wider Dorset landscape that shaped Hardy’s life, writing and deep love of nature, from the countryside surrounding his birthplace to the iconic Cerne Giant.

Filmed at Cerne with local sheep farmer Bertie, the programme highlights the careful balance of conservation on the ancient chalk figure. It follows the close cooperation between the farmer, his flock and the National Trust Area Ranger, Michael Clarke and his team of volunteers, who help maintain the Giant once the grazing sheep have moved on.

Hidden Treasures of the National Trust airs on Friday 15th May 2026.
