A Hedgehog Hospital for Dorset
The raffle at the 2024 Conference Dinner was in aid of hedgehog conservation. After discussion about the possible impact the Hardys’ unruly terrier, Wessex, might have had on Hardy’s description of the Max Gate hedgehogs as being ‘furtive’, £204.32p was raised for the Dorset Mammal Group’s project to set up a hedgehog hospital.
The Dorset Mammal Group is a registered charity and the project, spearheaded by the Hedgehog Section, is part of a wider initiative to enhance hedgehog conservation throughout the county. Feedback from carers in towns and villages has confirmed the urgent need to establish a centre of excellence which can cope with the often complex needs of sick or injured hedgehogs.
Working with local veterinary practices a business model has been developed and suitable premises are being sought. Annual running costs are calculated at about £50,000 and the generous support of the Hardy Society is much appreciated. For online donations the Dorset Mammal Group’s account details are;
