The commemorative plaque to mark Thomas Hardy and his connection to the building that caught fire in South Street has yet to be recovered. Construction work is underway to clear up the site, where Thomas Hardy trained as an architect from 1856 to 1862.
Equally tragic is that the building next door is also lost, where William Barnes, Thomas Hardy's friend and mentor lived and ran a "Gentleman's Boarding School" from 1837 to 1847, when he was appointed curate of Whitcombe near Dorchester. He continued to run the boarding school but gave it up in 1862.
