The Hand of Ethelberta Study Day

Marking the 150th Anniversary of The Hand of Ethelberta Study Day

The Hand of Ethelberta: A Comedy in Chapters is Hardy’s fifth novel, published in 1876.

We marked the occasion with a special Study Day, exploring the theme and other elements of the book.

The New Hardy Players joined us for a special script run-through of the Autumn production they are planning based on the novel.

Professor Angelique Richardson was our keynote speaker, Exeter University students presented papers and THS Chair & Academic Director and CoM member, Alban O’Brien also gave lectures.

The afternoon ended with a delightful harp recital performed by Florence Astley.

An unexpected visit from some familiar sci-fi characters provided an amusing interlude at lunch time.
