Tess's Folk Songs - A Musical Evening with James Findlay and Jerry Bird

A Hardy Birthday Weekend Event

James Findlay is a well-known singer and multi-instrumentalist in the traditional folk scene. He started playing the fiddle at about eight years old and guitar at fifteen. In December 2009 his extraordinary talent was recognized when he won the BBC Young Folk Award, and has since played innumerable solo gigs, as well as collaborating with other artists, and has recorded several highly-acclaimed albums including Another Day, Another Story which was nominated for the 'Best Folk Album 2013' in the Spiral Earth Awards.. In 2015-18 he performed in the National Theatre’s touring production of Sebastian Faulks’ novel Birdsong, for which he also acted as Musical Director.

Jerry Bird has played fiddle, guitar and mandolin in various folk and folk-rock bands, and is well known in the Dorchester area for hosting various traditional music pub sessions. He is also a writer on folklore and his books include Songs from the Magical Tradition, which explores the mystical side of traditional folk music. For several years in the mid-2000s he and James often appeared as the duo ‘Fingers ‘n’ Frets’, and they recorded an album together, The Dorchester Hornpipe.

Together they will be performing the songs which Hardy either mentions or alludes to in Tess of the d’Urbervilles, along with some traditional Dorset tunes, some of which were sourced from the Hardy family manuscript books. The songs will be introduced with readings from the relevant passages in the novel.
