In  Hardy’s Far from the Madding Crowd (1874) Bathsheba Everdene sends a valentine’s card to Farmer Boldwood and this is the catalyst for the ensuing events in the novel. With Valentine’s Day fast approaching we are running a competition to write a card, love poem or letter of no more that 150 words on the aspects of Dorchester that you love and to celebrate how great and unique the town is. The competition will be judged by poet Annie Freud. The winning entries will be published (with your permission) in the Dorset Echo, Waterstones Bookshop, Dorchester Heritage Magazine and will appear on the STAND website.

Closing date: Friday 10th February 4pm. Entries may be handwritten or typed. Please submit all entries by hand or post to Waterstones Bookshop, 45 South Street, Dorchester DT1 1DQ.

We look forward to receiving your work with some exciting prizes from Waterstones!!
