A new play about Thomas Hardy and his wives by the father of folk horror, David Pinner, whose novel ‘Ritual’ inspired the legendary cult movie ‘The Wicker Man’.
WHAT I REALLY THINK OF MY HUSBAND examines the life of one of the most celebrated British writers of all times; from the tortuous nature of the man himself, the trials and tribulations of his two wives, Emma and Florence, to the legacy of his literary genius.
Upon the publication of ‘Jude the Obscure’, 60-year-old Hardy finds himself childless, with a house full of cats and an ailing but outspoken wife, Emma. With only his fame, fortune, and a roving eye for the ladies to compensate for it, Hardy discovers he can’t master the real world and he is haunted by the ghosts of his past.
Central to Hardy’s dilemma is his chaotic relationship with his childhood sweetheart and first wife, Emma, whom he now shamefully neglects. But Emma is an ardent Christian and a Suffragette, who always says what she is thinking, so her diary is entitled ‘What I Really Think of My Husband’.
And when the beautiful Florence Dugdale enters their household - Hardy’s amanuensis - Emma tells her: ‘Doctor Crippen and my husband have poisoners’ moustaches, so, Florence, you had best watch out for yourself!’
Such is the force of Emma’s personality that on her death, Thomas writes his greatest poetry to her haunting memory, so the play is a poetic and comedic, disturbing ghost story, with spine-chilling music and spectral effects. WHAT I REALLY THINK OF MY HUSBAND enjoys its world premiere on 21st November-2nd December at The Golden Goose Theatre, 146 Camberwell Rd, London SE5 0RR, presented by award-winning And Tomorrow Theatre Company.
